Contemporary Rear Extension | Hackney E5
A limited budget doesn't have to limit good design. This contemporary rear extension to a Victorian terraced house in Hackney shows how thoughtful architecture, creative thinking and carefully chosen reclaimed materials can transform the way a home is lived in without unnecessary expense.
The clients wanted a bright, open-plan kitchen, dining and living space that connected more naturally to their north-facing garden. Maximising natural daylight was essential, so the extension was carefully designed around a series of frameless windows and rooflights that draw light deep into the house while creating a bold, sculptural form from the garden.
Working closely with the clients, Studio DC Architects looked beyond conventional building materials to make the budget work harder. Reclaimed and surplus materials were incorporated throughout the project, giving them a second life while adding warmth, character and individuality to the finished home. Discarded ‘seconds’ insulation was used where possible, while the large patio doors were sourced through eBay after being surplus to requirements on another construction project. Fixed glazed panels provided an elegant and cost-effective alternative to more expensive framed glazing systems.
Inside, reclaimed hardwood parquet flooring, reclaimed Iroko worktops and geometric patterned tiles create a warm and welcoming interior that contrasts with the crisp contemporary form of the extension. The result is a home that feels distinctive rather than compromised, proving that sustainability and careful budgeting can often inspire the most creative architectural solutions.
By looking at materials differently and focusing investment where it mattered most, the project shows that great design isn't defined by the size of the budget, but by the quality of the ideas behind it.
