This Edwardian semi-detached house in Wanstead sits within the Aldersbrook Conservation Area, overlooking Wanstead Park. When our clients first purchased the property, they already knew the layout didn’t quite work for their young family — a dark rear extension, disconnected living spaces and limited storage made everyday life feel more fragmented than it should.
They approached Studio DC Architects to help reimagine the house, developing a solution that would bring clarity, light, and flexibility.
From the earliest conversations, the focus was on working closely together to find the right balance between practicality and character. The design that evolved includes a full refurbishment, a new rear extension, a discreet side extension and a refined loft conversion, all carefully composed to improve how the house works day to day while respecting its Edwardian character and conservation area setting.
At ground floor level, the new open-plan kitchen, dining and living space brings light and garden together, creating a more natural heart to the home — a space where cooking, play and family life can overlap. A concealed side extension provides a utility room, boot room and storage, keeping everyday clutter out of the main living spaces.
The original house is carefully restored, including reinstated red brickwork and a renewed Welsh slate roof, while the new extension is expressed in crisp white brick. Linear rooflights introduce a quiet separation between old and new, drawing daylight deep into the plan.
Upstairs, the loft conversion refines a previously approved scheme, creating an additional bedroom and shower room with improved light and efficiency.
