Sometimes the biggest transformation doesn't come from adding more space, but from making better use of what's already there.

This two-bedroom apartment in Hackney was completely reimagined through a full renovation and internal remodelling to create a brighter, calmer and more sociable home. The client loved the character of the property but felt the existing layout was dark, disconnected and no longer suited the way she wanted to live.

Working closely together, Studio DC Architects explored a number of design options before arriving at a solution that reflected her lifestyle and priorities. By removing a dividing wall between the kitchen and dining areas, introducing new rooflights and adding elegant Crittall-style glazing, the apartment is now filled with natural light and each space flows naturally into the next.

Carefully designed bespoke joinery makes the most of every square metre, including a wraparound oak dining bench with integrated storage. Warm cork flooring runs throughout the apartment, while a simple black kitchen provides a calm backdrop to everyday life.

The project demonstrates how thoughtful design can completely transform the experience of a home without increasing its footprint, creating spaces that feel brighter, more connected and a pleasure to live in.
