Penthouse rooftop addition | Wapping E1
A growing city doesn't always need to expand outwards — sometimes the best opportunities are already there. This planning-approved proposal transforms an existing residential tower in Wapping by adding a contemporary two-storey rooftop extension, creating a new duplex penthouse while enhancing the homes below and giving the entire building a fresh identity.
Designing upwards on a constrained urban site required a careful balance between ambition and sensitivity. Studio DC Architects worked closely with the existing building, neighbouring properties and planning policies to develop a proposal that protects daylight, respects surrounding views and sits comfortably within the wider streetscape.
The new rooftop addition is designed as a lightweight contemporary form, carefully proportioned to complement rather than compete with the existing building. New Corten steel cladding, crisp rendered surfaces and finely detailed windows transform the appearance of the tower, replacing a tired exterior with a confident and distinctive architectural character.
Alongside the new penthouse, the project includes improvements to the existing apartments below, creating better homes while making more efficient use of the building as a whole.
Planning permission was secured for this challenging proposal, demonstrating how thoughtful design can unlock the hidden potential of existing buildings. Rather than replacing what was already there, the scheme gives the building a new lease of life—creating additional homes while making a positive contribution to the character of Wapping's evolving skyline.
