Copper & Clay House

Victorian House Extension & Renovation | Islington N7

Copper and Clay House transforms a Victorian terrace in N7, Islington, creating a lighter, more generous ground floor with a stronger connection to the garden.

The original layout was divided by a central spine wall, separating the front and rear rooms and leaving the kitchen enclosed. Removing this wall and adding a 14 sq m side infill and rear extension increases the ground-floor area to 76 sq m. This creates a continuous sequence of spaces, from the quieter front room through to a new open-plan kitchen and dining area overlooking the garden.

The centre of the house is reorganised to include a WC, utility area and built-in storage. These elements remain close at hand but discreet, allowing the living spaces to feel calm and uncluttered.

A large glazed roof brings daylight deep into the plan, while slim black-framed doors open the kitchen onto the terrace. The semicircular window and curved window seat form a sheltered place to read and enjoy the garden throughout the year.

Pale white oak and soft shades of terrazzo bring warmth to the interior. Outside, clay tiles in warm terracotta and green-patinated copper give the extension its distinctive character against the weathered Victorian brickwork.

Currently at planning design stage, the project shows how a modest addition can transform an existing home through better light, storage, movement and contact with the garden.
